Five-letter words by the numbers

The five-letter lists hold 12,653 accepted guesses, and 1,402 of them can be the daily answer (11.1%). The rest are valid guesses that never come up as the word of the day. That difference matters when you choose a list to browse, because the two sets look very different:

The biggest gap is the letter S at the end: 3,859 accepted words end in S, but only 23 possible answers do. Plurals and verb forms are accepted as guesses, yet almost never the answer, so a trailing S is rarely worth a slot early on. E and Y are the opposite: 276 of the 1,489 words ending in E, and 171 of the 1,269 ending in Y, can be the answer. The counts come from the current word lists and are checked against the answer list, so they can change if the lists are edited.
