5-letter words with no repeated letters

1,012 of Puzzico’s 1,402 possible answers, 72.2%, have five different letters. See how common openers compare by the letters they hit on average, a verified list of common no-repeat words, and how to use them.

A five-letter word with no repeated letters is one that uses five different letters — no letter appears twice. STARE qualifies; STEEL does not, because it repeats E. These words matter because a guess with five distinct letters tests five letters at once, while a word that repeats a letter effectively tests fewer — which is why they make the strongest openings. Among Puzzico’s common answer words, more than 1,000 have no repeated letters, so you are never short of choices; the lists below are a useful, everyday selection.

Why no repeated letters helps

Your first guess is played with no clues, so the goal is simply to learn as much as possible. Five different letters cover more of the alphabet than four different letters plus a repeat, so on average they rule out more words. A repeat is not wasted later — once you know a letter is in the word, a second copy tests whether it appears twice — but as an opener, distinct letters learn more. The full opening strategy is in the starting-word comparison guide; this page is the list itself.

How many answers repeat a letter?

Counted across Puzzico’s word lists: 1,012 of the 1,402 possible answers (72.2%) have five different letters, and 390 (27.8%) repeat at least one. Of the 12,653 words you may guess, 8,119 (64.2%) have no repeat. Where an answer does repeat a letter, E is the most likely culprit: it appears twice in 101 of those 390 answers, ahead of O (44), L (39) and T (37).

How common openers compare

A simple way to compare openers is how many of a word’s five letters turn up in the answer, averaged over all 1,402 answers (any position, so a green or yellow tile counts the same). The table also shows how often the whole first row comes back grey:

OpenerAverage letters in the answerAnswers with all five grey
STARE1.868.6%
ALERT1.866.9%
RAISE (same letters as ARISE)1.836.1%
LEARN1.808.3%
CRATE (same letters as TRACE, REACT, CATER)1.778.6%
STORE1.758.8%
RATIO1.677.1%
OCEAN1.628.7%
ADIEU1.506.6%
AUDIO1.328.1%

All ten have five different letters, so the gap comes from which letters they use. The ones built from the most common letters score highest, while the vowel-only openers ADIEU and AUDIO hit fewer letters on average because they spend slots on D, U and I rather than on R, T, S and L. This is one simple measure and it ignores letter position, so treat it as a guide to choosing, not a full strategy. MOUND, the second guess suggested below, averages only 1.01 as a first word and comes back all grey 30.7% of the time, but its value is different: STARE followed by MOUND tests ten different letters, averages 2.87 of them in the answer, and leaves only 0.9% of answers with all ten grey.

Which letters earn a slot

Share of the 1,402 answers that contain each letter at least once: E 47.3%, A 40.3%, R 37.8%, T 31.3%, O 29.2%, S 29.2%, L 28.8%, I 28.2%, N 25.7% and C 20.0%. At the other end, Z, Q, X and J each appear in only about 1.5% of answers. An opener made of five letters from the first group, with none repeated, is the practical recipe, and it is exactly what STARE, ALERT and RAISE do.

Strong openers with no repeats

Each of these uses five common, distinct letters, so any works as a reliable first guess:

STARE, ALERT, CRATE, TRACE, REACT, CATER, LEARN, RATIO, STORE and RAISE.

Vowel-first picks (three vowels, no repeats)

When you keep landing on vowel-heavy answers, opening with three different vowels flushes them out fast. These each carry three distinct vowels and no repeats:

ARISE, OCEAN, ALIEN, ADORE, ABUSE, ALONE, OUTER, UNITE, UNTIE, QUOTE, ARGUE and ACUTE.

Common 5-letter words with no repeated letters (A–Z)

A browsable set of everyday words, each verified to use five different letters — one or two for most starting letters:

  • A–C: ALERT, ALTER, ARISE, BEAST, BRACE, BEARD, CATER, CRATE, CLEAR
  • D–F: DEALT, DELTA, DRONE, EARTH, ENACT, EMAIL, FLARE, FEAST, FALSE
  • G–I: GRATE, GREAT, GLARE, HEART, HASTE, HORSE, INLET, IDEAL, INTER
  • J–L: JOINT, JAUNT, JEANS, KNEAD, KNELT, KNOTS, LATER, LASER, LEARN
  • M–O: METAL, MORAL, MERIT, NOISE, NICER, NOTED, OPERA, OUTER, OCEAN
  • P–R: PLATE, PEARL, PETAL, QUART, QUOTE, QUOTA, RAISE, RATIO, REACT
  • S–U: STARE, STORE, SLATE, TRACE, TRADE, TENOR, ULTRA, UNITE, UNTIE
  • V–Z: VOTER, VALET, VALOR, WATER, WROTE, WORSE, YEARN, YEAST, ZEBRA, ZESTY

How to use the list

Pick one opener you like and reuse it — consistency beats hunting for the single best word. If your first guess does not place a letter, follow it with a second word made of completely different letters (open with STARE, then try something like MOUND) so that across two guesses you have tested ten letters. Then feed what you know into the Word Solver to see which accepted words still fit, or browse five-letter words by starting letter when you want more options. Practise as many openers as you like in Unlimited mode, then come back for the shared daily word.
