Five-letter words with Q, Z, X and J
Puzzico's word list holds 21 five-letter words with Q, 21 with Z, 19 with X and 18 with J — and every one can be the daily answer. Here are the full lists, the letter patterns worth knowing, and how to play a rare letter.
Q, Z, X and J are the rare four — the letters that most often trip up a guess. In Puzzico's answer list there are exactly 21 five-letter words with a Q, 21 with a Z, 19 with an X and 18 with a J, and because this list is the answer pool, every word below can be the daily answer. Here is the complete set for each letter, the pattern behind it, and how to use a rare letter well.
Five-letter words with Q (21)
EQUAL, EQUIP, QUACK, QUAIL, QUAKE, QUALM, QUART, QUEEN, QUERY, QUEST, QUEUE, QUICK, QUIET, QUILT, QUIRK, QUITE, QUOTA, QUOTE, SQUAD, SQUAT, SQUID.
The pattern is almost a rule: every Q here is followed by U. So a green or yellow Q all but guarantees a U next to it, and the Q sits either at the start (QU-) or right after an S (SQU-). That makes Q one of the most informative rare letters — confirm it and you have effectively placed two letters.
Five-letter words with Z (21)
BLAZE, CRAZE, CRAZY, DIZZY, DOZEN, FROZE, FUZZY, GAUZE, GLAZE, GRAZE, HAZEL, OZONE, PIZZA, PLAZA, PRIZE, TOPAZ, UNZIP, WALTZ, WOOZY, ZEBRA, ZESTY.
Z is the most flexible of the four: it opens words (ZEBRA, ZESTY), sits in the middle (BLAZE, DOZEN), and ends them (TOPAZ, WALTZ). Watch for doubles — DIZZY, FUZZY and PIZZA all carry a ZZ, so if a Z turns yellow, testing a second Z is worthwhile.
Five-letter words with X (19)
ANNEX, BOXER, EXACT, EXCEL, EXERT, EXILE, EXIST, EXTRA, INBOX, INDEX, MAXIM, MIXER, PIXEL, PROXY, RELAX, SIXTH, SIXTY, TOXIC, TOXIN.
X clusters at the edges: many of these start with EX- (EXACT, EXILE, EXTRA) or end in -X (ANNEX, INBOX, RELAX). A yellow X near the front usually points to an EX- opening; a yellow X you cannot place early is often sitting at the very end.
Five-letter words with J (18)
BANJO, ENJOY, FJORD, JAUNT, JEANS, JELLY, JERKY, JEWEL, JOKER, JOLLY, JUDGE, JUICE, JUICY, JUMBO, JUMPY, JUROR, MAJOR, NINJA.
J is the most predictable: 13 of the 18 start with J, so a J that is not green in the first slot is usually one of the five exceptions where it sits inside the word — BANJO, ENJOY, FJORD, MAJOR or NINJA. FJORD is the odd one out worth remembering, with the J in second place.
No answer packs two of them
One thing the list makes clear: no five-letter answer combines two of Q, Z, X and J. They are simply too rare to co-occur in five letters (QUARTZ, which does, is six letters long). So you never need to hunt for a word with, say, both a Q and a Z — if you have confirmed one rare letter, the others are out.
How to play a rare letter
Do not spend an early guess fishing for a rare letter at random — most answers contain none of the four, so a speculative Q or J usually comes back grey and teaches you little. Instead, save the rare letters for when a clue points to one: a yellow that will not fit anywhere common, or a gap that only an unusual word fills. When that happens, these lists turn a hard letter into an advantage, because a rare letter narrows the field fast.
