How daily word games work (and the UTC reset)
When does the daily word change, and why does it feel like it flips at a strange hour? How Puzzico picks the daily word, what 00:00 UTC means in your time zone, and what happens to your streak at the reset.
Puzzico’s Daily word changes at 00:00 UTC, every day, for every player at the same moment. That is midnight in Coordinated Universal Time — not midnight where you live — so depending on your time zone the new word can appear in the evening, the middle of the night, or the morning. Everyone who opens the Daily on a given UTC date gets the same word, and a countdown on the game shows how long until the next one.
What 00:00 UTC is in your time zone
UTC has no daylight saving, so the reset is fixed on the clock but moves by an hour for places that change their clocks. Here is when the new Daily arrives:
- US Pacific — 5:00 pm in summer (PDT), 4:00 pm in winter (PST).
- US Eastern — 8:00 pm in summer (EDT), 7:00 pm in winter (EST).
- UK — 1:00 am in summer (BST), midnight in winter (GMT).
- Central Europe — 2:00 am in summer (CEST), 1:00 am in winter (CET).
- India — 5:30 am, all year.
- China — 8:00 am, all year.
- Japan — 9:00 am, all year.
- Sydney — 10:00 am in winter (AEST), 11:00 am in summer (AEDT).
If your new puzzle seems to show up “early” or “late” a few times a year, that is daylight saving in your region moving relative to UTC, not the game changing its schedule.
Why one global clock instead of your local midnight
A single reset time means one word is live for the whole world at once. Nobody is a day ahead of anybody else, so “did you get today’s?” means the same thing in every country, and you can compare notes without spoiling anything for a friend in another time zone. The trade-off is the one above: the switch lands at a different hour of your day. A game keyed to local midnight would feel more natural for one person and would let two friends in different countries be on different words at the same moment. Puzzico picks the shared word.
How the daily word is chosen
The Daily is not a pre-printed calendar you could look ahead in. When the first player of a new UTC day arrives, Puzzico draws that day’s word at random from its own answer list — skipping any word used in the last 180 daily puzzles, so you will not see a repeat for about six months. The word is fixed for the day once drawn, and the answer is never sent to your browser until the game is over. That is also why there is no way to read tomorrow’s word early: it has not been chosen yet.
What happens if the reset hits mid-game
If you start the Daily shortly before 00:00 UTC and cross the reset, you do not lose the board. An unfinished game from the previous day can be picked back up for up to 24 hours, while today’s new word is ready separately. Finished games are final: there is one official result per Daily puzzle for the browser you play in. For the same reason, yesterday’s word is kept off the past-answers page until a full day after the reset, so a game still open across midnight cannot be spoiled — a day’s answer is listed from 00:00 UTC two days later.
Streaks and the reset
Your Daily streak counts consecutive UTC days that you won. Today’s puzzle not being finished yet does not break it — the streak only breaks when a day ends without a win. If a day’s puzzle is ever withdrawn, that day is skipped so your streak is protected. Unlimited practice keeps its own stats and never touches your Daily streak, which makes it the safe place to experiment with a risky opener. See the stats page for your own numbers.
Where your progress lives
There is no account. Your games and stats are tied to an anonymous cookie in the browser you play in, so they do not follow you to another browser or device, and clearing your browser data clears them. If you play the Daily on both a phone and a laptop, treat them as two separate players — and remember the word itself is the same on both.
Make the reset work for you
Work out your own reset time from the list above and slot the Daily into it — many people play right when it flips. If it lands at an awkward hour, nothing is lost by playing later: the same word stays live until the next 00:00 UTC. For extra reps between resets, use Unlimited; new to the rules, start with how to play; and once you are three guesses in and stuck, the Word Solver shows what still fits, and the FAQ answers the rest.
